Benefits of the new Income tax e-filing portal for taxpayers

The income tax department of India has launched a new income tax E-filling portal on 7th June 2021.
The Income tax department had announced on 20th May 2021. “The Income Tax (I-T) department will launch a new ‘taxpayer friendly’ income tax e-filing portal www.incometax.gov.in, on 7 June. In preparation for this launch and for migration activities, the existing portal of the department at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in would not be available for a brief period of six days from June 1 to 6,” the order said.
“The new e-filing portal (http://incometax.gov.in) is aimed at providing taxpayer convenience and a modern, seamless experience to taxpayers. It is another step by CBDT to provide ease of compliance to its taxpayers & other stakeholders,” the Income Tax department tweeted from its official handle.
The new e-filing portal will be https://incometax.gov.in replacing the existing portal https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
What is an e- filling portal?
The e-filling portal is used by the taxpayers to file their income tax returns (ITRs) in their individual or business category. The e-filling portal can also be used for raising complaints, seeking refunds and other issues concerning the taxpayer. Additionally, the e-filling portal can also be used by the taxman to issue notices and circulars to the income tax paying public.
What are the benefits of this new income tax portal?
- User friendly interface
The new e-filling portal has a taxpayer friendly interface. It makes navigation through the website a lot easier for the income tax paying public. The taxpayer friendly website has been integrated with immediate processing of income tax returns, this ensures that quick refunds to the taxpayer. - Dashboard facility
The e-filling portal has a dashboard facility. This helps the income tax payer to save their interactions and uploads on the website. This feature helps in the follow up action by the taxpayer on the e-filling portal. - Free of Cost ITR filling
The ITR preparation software for ITR form -1 and 4 (Online and offline) and ITR 2 (offline) will be completely free of cost for the taxpayer. However, other ITR forms i.e. ITRs 3, 5, 6, 7 are presently unavailable, which will soon be made available. - Pre-filled forms
The e-filling portal will provide the taxpayer with pre-filed facility which minimizes the taxpayers time and efforts. - Help & support
Along with the portal the income tax department has also set-up call centers for the taxpayer’s assistance with immediate solution on problems which may arise. Additionally, the e-filling portal also has an integrated chatbot which helps the taxpayer with FAQs, information and tutorial videos. - Mobile Access
The key features on the desktop website will be subsequently enabled in a mobile application. The mobile application will be launched on a later date. - Multiple Payment Gateway
The new e-filling portal will present the taxpayers with the option of paying taxes using RTGS, NEFT, net-banking, UPI etc. These features will be updated subsequently.
What are the new ITR filling deadlines?
The Government of India extended the income tax return filling deadline for the financial year 2020-21 for individuals, 30th September 2021 is the last date allowed for individual taxpayers to file their I-T return. Furthermore, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for companies by a month, up till 30th November 2021.
